An idea from a tragedy
Will Wright had the idea for the game.
After a devastating fire that destroyed his home, he thought about how people rebuild their lives after disasters.
This inspired him to create a simulator in which players could build houses and manage the lives of virtual characters.

Triumph of SimCity 2000
Will Wright, founder of Maxis (1987), starts thinking about the concept of the game, thinking that if you populate the houses (from SimCity) with people, it could be something new and cool.
SimCity was released in 1989.
All this time Will is actively working on it, and for the first time applies the ideas that would later become the basis for The Sims.
1997 —
Development begins
Active development of the game under the working title “Project X” begins in Maxis studio (development of the game started with the first game object - toilet and ways of interaction with it).
Official release of The Sims (EA Games). The game is immediately recognized and becomes a hit.

Release of the first add-on “The Sims: Livin Large”, which added many new features and content.

The rich life, however, quickly got boring and in your head appeared the obsession to break the idyll of your own heroes to pieces. Without a challenge, there's no game. People love a challenge. People love drama. And burnt-out houses.

There are different kinds of death in different parts of the game. And death itself throughout The Sims lineup is often treated as a fun game challenge
However, grieving is embedded in the game's gameplay mechanics: loved ones and acquaintances of a deceased Sim may start crying unexpectedly over the course of a few game days
